Acknowledged to be a major breakthrough in structure and theme, A Chorus Line was first performed as a workshop production at Joseph Papp's Public Theatre, then mounted as a full-scale musical at the Newman Theatre (a part of the Public Theartre complex). Less than two months after its highly acclaimed opening, the show moved to the Shubert Theatre.
The musical's genesis began when Michael Bennett met with some 24 dancers for two marathon tape-recorded sessions intended to probe their backgrounds and motivations. The tapes were turned over to Nicholas Dante, one of the dancers present, to fashion into a play with the collaboration of playwright James Kirkwood. It was only after the first run-through that Marvin Hamlisch and Edward Kleban were brought in to create the score.
The story takes place on the bare stage of a theatre during n audition for eight chorus dancers. One by one, as they are prodded from the back of the auditorium by Zach (Robert LuPone), the show's director, the dancers reveal who they are and why they are there. The main story deals with Cassie (Donna McKechnie), who is trying to start over again after a brief success, and her relationship with Zach, her former lover, who opposes the move. "'The show is dedicated to anyone who has ever danced in a chorus or marched in step anywhere."
